Congleton residents are being invited to help shape the future of the town’s green spaces by contributing to the draft neighbourhood plan, now open for consultation. This is a unique opportunity for locals to influence how Congleton develops, ensuring that its much-loved parks, playing fields, and natural areas remain at the heart of the community.

Congleton Town Council is calling on residents to share their experiences of getting around town as part of its effort to improve local transport and travel options.

With cars dominating the roads, the council wants to find better ways to balance the freedom of driving with the need to reduce congestion, cut air pollution, and improve road safety.

The draft neighbourhood plan is focused on making travel in Congleton safer, greener, and more convenient for everyone.

The draft Neighbourhood Plan outlines key policies, aspirations and a range of proposals to encourage active travel — walking, cycling and public transport.

These ideas include:

  • Safer connections – better links to bus stops, train stations, and walking routes;
  • Improved bus services – new routes, bus laybys, and roads that accommodate buses;
  • Encouraging greener choices – developers will be asked to create travel plans that promote walking, cycling, and public transport use;
  • Pedestrian-friendly spaces – upgrades to public areas that prioritize walking and cycling, along with secure bike storage;
  • Event access – plans to make it easier for people to reach local events sustainably.

The council plans to ensure that all parts of Congleton are equipped with the facilities needed for walking, cycling, and using public transport.

But the Council said the success of this plan lay in community input.

“We want to hear from everyone,” said David McGifford, chief officer at Congleton Town Council.

“Whether you’re a driver, a cyclist, a bus user, or a walker, your feedback is vital. Together, we can create a town that’s easier to navigate and better for the environment.

“What’s working well for you when it comes to getting around? What could be improved? Are there bus routes you would like to see added or safer paths for walking and cycling?

“Do you agree that Congleton’s Neighbourhood Plan should seek to encourage better transport provision across the town?”

The consultation is a chance to shape Congleton’s future. People can share thoughts via the neighbourhood plan survey and help the council bring its “vision of a more connected and sustainable community” to life.
