Congleton Lawn Tennis Club staged its 2023 Vice-President’s Trophy tournament on Sunday.
Despite a number of last-minute withdrawals due to injury and illness, 20 players took to the court (writes Andrew Giltrap).
However an early injury to Anne Moore meant that junior Rhys Eaton was called upon to make up the numbers and did very well, getting through the group stages of the foursomes-style event.
In the first semi-final, Matt Parker and Alex Pletscher defeated Lydia Bass and Claire Wilkins.
In the second semi, Nick Wilkins and Kathy Taylor defeated Eaton and Venus Moses.
The final saw Parker and Pletscher achieve victory and secure the prize vouchers for Phanthong Thai, Sandbach, donated by an anonymous donor.
Thanks went to all the players and DJ Mandy for the music during the afternoon.
Thankfully all of the action was completed before the rain started!
The next tournament is on Sunday, 2nd July, the Town Mayor’s Charity Tournament, with prizes from Portobello Pizzeria. Entries can now be made via the website.
Members are encouraged to go along even if they are not playing as there will be a clothing sale and racket demo during the afternoon and food from the Sunshine Street Food Company.
On Saturday and Sunday (1st and 2nd July) the club has its try tennis for free events.
Email freetennis@congletonlawntennis.club to book a slot or turn up between 10am and 1pm on either day.
