The Rotary Club of Congleton’s popular fundraising Swimathon event will be held at Congleton Leisure Centre on two separate dates in 2025, its organisers revealed this week.

Swimmers can either take part from 2pm until 8pm on Wednesday afternoon, 19th March, or on Saturday, 22nd March.

On both days, teams of sponsored swimmers can swim in relays lasting a total of 55 minutes to raise money for a charity of their choice.

As usual, the sponsorship money raised is split between their own charity and two good causes chosen by the Rotary Club of Congleton.

Rtn Sandra Conway, who is organising the event, said that a total of 78 teams could take part over the two days.

“It’s a great money-making event for local charities,” she said.

“Last year, the teams raised more than £24,000 – a fantastic result. Since 1966 swimmers have raised an amazing total of over £425,000.”

A team can be from two to eight swimmers. Teams must register in advance and book their time slot. Sponsorship forms are available from the organiser and sponsors are encouraged to add sufficient details to attract GiftAid, which allows Rotary to reclaim the tax on the money and adds over 20% to the amount that they sponsor – a valuable addition to the total amount raised.

Teams are encouraged to collect their sponsorship money online to save handling large amounts of cash.

Some teams – from families, schools, youth groups and local companies return year after year, said Rtn Conway.

“Swimathon is a great way to get some exercise, keep fit and do some good for local charities,” she added.
