The annual past captains event was held at Astbury Golf Club on Tuesday, 27th August.
A 12-hole competition preceded the dinner and some 16 players took to the course and while rain was threatened, only a quick shower was experienced.
The event attracted keen golfers, with many trying to get their hands on the trophy which has been played for since 1976 (writes Orville Taylor).
This year conditions were slightly tricky as the greens were still recovering from the annual maintenance programme, but as always there were those who defied the odds and one of those as 1994 captain Alan White, who, despite being under the weather, returned a healthy 27pts. White was quick to point out that his current handicap helped him accumulate the points.
Showing that age is no barrier to a good score the runner-up was Ted Darton with 26pts. Third place went to Paul Bestwick, who was desperate to add to his recent tally of wins.
Current club captain Ian Coffey had past captain Mike Sumner acting as master of ceremonies. Dr Sumner opened the proceedings by welcoming everyone, especially Dave White, who was captain in 1986 and had travelled from southern counties.
Thanks were given to the captain for honouring his duty in providing the wine and, in his absence, president Peter Bozon the after-dinner port.
All 22 present enjoyed an excellent meal provided by the club’s caterers.
Unfortunately, at this point events came to a temporary halt as the club captain was suddenly taken ill.
Thankfully having someone medically trained proved to be a major benefit as Dr Sumner was quickly required to use his experience in controlling the situation. Eventually Mr Coffey was able to leave the proceedings and move to a quieter part of the club.
Dr Sumner rose to the occasion and took charge of events, completing the presentation and entertaining the audience with some of his usual wit and wisdom.
Finally, the caterers and staff were thanked for their help and support.
It is pleasing to report that after seeing his own doctor, the captain was given the all-clear to continue his golfing career.
The provisional date for next year’s event is 26th August.
