Congleton’s elderly residents seeking companionship in these lonely times are being urged to contact Age UK following expansion of its successful telephone befriending service.

The Cheshire East charity, aptly named Keep in Touch has recruited additional trained volunteers to offer weekly calls to older people needing extra support.

Mike Smith, project co-ordinator for the Congleton Partnership, said “The service has been phenomenal. I would recommend older members of our community who feel they would benefit from receiving a friendly call to contact the team straight away.

“Those who have already signed up have spoken enthusiastically about the positive impact it has had on their lives over the last year.”

To access the service, call Age UK on 01625 612 958 or visit ageuk.org.uk.

• Keep in Touch is a telephone befriending service offered by Age UK Cheshire East, in association with the Charities Aid Foundation. The service is open to all older people living in Cheshire East, with priority being given to those who live alone. The service is free to access.
