HARGREAVES (Malcolm). Sadly passed away at home on 20th May, Malcolm, aged 81, of Congleton, and formerly of Biddulph. The dearly loved and devoted husband of Ann; treasured dad of Christopher, Jocelyn and Lloyd; loving father-in-law to Wendy and Mark; cherished grandpa to Jessica and partner Joe, and Tim, Daniel and Ben; dearest brother-in-law to Jane and Neil and Beth and Jeff, and a very dear uncle, cousin and friend to many. Malcolm will be greatly missed. Educated at Kingsfield School and Wolstanton Grammar School, Malcolm went on to study optics at Manchester. After qualification, he worked as an optometrist in Tunstall, Newcastle and Stretford. In 1971, Malcolm, with the help and support of wife Ann, established his own practice in Biddulph, where he worked until his retirement in 2000. Throughout his career, Malcolm was known and trusted by many. He was always professional but friendly and approachable, honest and honourable, always giving consideration to the patient and their needs. It could be said that Malcolm was a man of few words, a quiet and reserved person, happy in the background but with the ability to become quite the extrovert when the situation warranted it! Malcolm had a zest for life and was always involved in walking, gardening, badminton, decorating and DIY, and was ever-ready to support Ann with catering, transport, and offering a helping hand to any in need. Above all Malcolm was a family man. He was incredibly proud of his family, not only their achievements but the kind, generous and loving people they are. Music always played a big part in Malcolm’s life, singing in choirs, taking part in amateur dramatics, playing the church organ and of course revelling in the musical talents of granddaughter Jessica and grandson Tim. Always a great walker, one of the frustrations of later life was the inability, due to a stroke and vascular dementia, to go for long walks and soak up the beauty of nature. A lifetime of gardening became an impossible hobby to continue due to reduced mobility. It is with great sadness that we mourn his death, but also deep gratitude for all that he has meant, and will continue to mean, to those who knew him and loved him. A service of thanksgiving and committal will take place at Macclesfield Crematorium on Monday, 27th June at 11.30am. Please accept this, the only intimation, and will family and friends please meet at the crematorium. Family flowers only; donations, if desired, to Sightsavers.
