TIMMIS (John). John passed away peacefully at Clayton Manor Residential Care Home on 14th April 2022, aged 85 years. John was born in Congleton on 7th June 1936 and lived there all his life. He attended St Peter’s School and then the boys’ secondary school. At 18, he joined the Cheshire Regiment for his national service. While in the army, John excelled at cross-country and represented the regiment in competition. He always said that national service was the making of him, and he often reminisced about it. He met his future wife, Iris (Boardman), while working at Roldane Mill and they were married at St Stephen’s Church in Congleton in 1958. They started married life in Nelson Street but soon moved to West Heath where they raised their two daughters, Donna (Axson) and Paula (Carr) before moving to Mossley in 1987. John was a keen sportsman all his life, playing football for Congleton Rangers in his younger years, cricket, golf, badminton and pretty much anything else involving a ball! He also played crown green bowls for the ERF team, where he worked for many years, a hobby that he continued into retirement, eventually playing at the Railway Inn. Family was everything to him and perhaps his greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren, Eleanor and James Axson, and Daniel Carr. He greatly enjoyed his many trips to America to see his daughter Donna and her family in Ohio, travelling all over the country from South Carolina to the Rockies. There were also many treasured family holidays with both daughters and their families from Normandy to the Northumberland coast, creating unforgettable memories. John was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease in 2017 and eventually moved to Clayton Manor Residential Care Home. His family would like to thank the carers and staff for their kindness and exceptional care over the past 14 months. A celebration of John’s life for his family and friends will be held on Tuesday, 3rd May at 11am at St Stephen’s Church, Congleton, followed by a committal service at the Macclesfield crematorium at 12.15pm. Now resting in peace, he will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by his family and all who knew him.
