A great little setlist is this self-titled second album from all-female Berries (Holly Carter, Lauren Cooper and Lexi Clark). I remember their first one being a big ragged-arse and punkier, but this is far slicker, though still punky.
“Barricade” opens with spiky guitar and is a decent indie pop punk tune. “Creature” is darker, the beast being of the dark, and leaning toward math rock, like Foals in sections.
“Blurry Shapes” is almost prog from the fiddly start and has some of best vocals on the album.
“Balance” is a chance for a breather, an acoustic track, but is followed by “Jagged Routine”, Maximo Park meets a stadium-pleasing rock behemoth for the chorus.
“This Space” is back to math rock while “Narrow Tracks” is what a punk Beatles might have sounded like. “Crumpled Clothes” ends, a solid rocker … and all this is just over 30 minutes. Play loud; enjoy.
If you go to Bandcamp you can get a transparent green 140g 12” vinyl, too. See berriesband.bandcamp.com.
On 18th February they’re supporting the mighty Frank Turner at Wolverhampton’s Wulfrun Hall.
