Have a say on retaining town’s green spaces

Congleton residents are being invited to help shape the future of the town’s green spaces by contributing to the draft neighbourhood plan, now open for consultation. This is a unique opportunity for locals to influence how Congleton develops, ensuring that its much-loved parks, playing fields, and natural areas remain at the heart of the community.

Congleton Town Council said it was “deeply committed” to preserving and enhancing Congleton’s green spaces, recognising their role in improving quality of life.
Whether it’s the local park where children play, the sports pitch where teams gather or a quiet garden for reflection.
“These spaces are more than just open land — they’re places where people connect, recharge, and thrive,” said the council.
Research shows that green spaces are essential for both physical and mental health. From lowering stress levels and blood pressure to encouraging exercise and social interaction, the benefits are clear. Plus, green spaces help improve air quality, making them a vital part of a healthy town.
A “huge amount” of effort has gone into identifying and assessing the open and green spaces that make Congleton special, said the town council. These include:
• Parks and gardens: places for relaxation and community events;
• Sports pitches and courts: for team games and physical activity;
• Play areas: for children to explore and enjoy;
• Allotments: giving residents space to grow their own produce;
• Wildlife areas: supporting biodiversity and providing peaceful retreats; and
• New spaces: the council strongly supports creating additional green spaces to serve new housing developments.
People can also say what would they like to see in Congleton’s green spaces – such as more picnic areas, upgraded play equipment, or a focus on wildlife-friendly landscaping.
“We all benefit from access to beautiful, well-maintained green spaces,” said David McGifford, chief officer of Congleton Town Council.
“They’re places for exercise, relaxation, and connection. But they’re also important for our health and the environment. We want to hear from you about how we can make them even better.”
