On the hottest night ever recorded in the UK, residents on Brooks Lane, Middlewich, were advised to stay inside and keep their doors and windows closed as a fire raged on a nearby industrial estate.
Twelve fire engines from across the area attended the major incident on Monday evening.
Crews used an aerial ladder platform, a Scorpion turret and a high volume pump to tackle the blaze.
The fire involved several palletised containers. No casualties were reported but there was a large smoke plume rising from the site.
Nearby residents were advised to close their windows and doors as a precaution and any bystanders were asked to vacate the area to enable emergency services unhindered access.
Several roads were closed around Middlewich town centre and people were advised to avoid the area.
At 10.45pm, 12 fire engines were still at the scene and the fire had been split into sectors by firefighters.
At 1am, firefighters reported that they were making progress. The high volume pump had been placed by the Trent and Mersey canal to draw large quantities of water onto the blaze. Crews were using the Scorpion high reach turret to tackle the remaining seats of fire on the site.
By 6.30am, the blaze had been extinguished. Two fire engines remained at the scene, monitoring products on the site. A limited cordon remained in place around Road Beta and there was a no through route on Brooks Lane. Residents on Brooks Lane were still being advised to keep their windows and doors closed as a precaution.
